During the current economic climate, I was captivated by the extremes that I saw on the street. I wanted to create composite digital images that would reflect this world where values and basic human dignity seem in question. I used the financial market collapse as a backdrop for a homeless man's sarcastic indictment of those who created the mess. Originally from Indianapolis, Ron Martin makes his feelings known in 50 ft. stature on a billboard - no longer able to be ignored. The image upholds his dignity while forcing an acknowledgment of his views. I also wanted to play into the difference between fantasy and reality. In one image, a classic, silk-screened, light-drenched, made-up, and retouched model is shown in a self-loving pose. Opposite and older woman, Ms. Schwartz, appears nervous of being undervalued for her growing age and less than supermodel appearance. In the work, the model's hands are up and around her body, while her counterpart's arms are under and around her body. The contrast between the two creates a tight compositional element locked in place by the "Statue of Liberty" lady on the street. I also wanted to address the world's energy crisis. Nuclear power takes center stage as a big screen production pitted against celebrity with the thought that, in the world today, we may not be making the best choices. My exhibition opens on February 13th with a reception between 6-8:30PM, and runs through March 15th on Saturdays & Sundays between 12&5pm. Gallery 14 is located at 14 Mercer Street in Hopewell, NJ.
